Salem is also known as the Mango city in Tamilnadu. The name ‘Salem’ appears to have been derived from Sela or Shalya by which the term refers to the country around the hills, as in the inscriptions. Local folklore believes Salem to be the birthplace of the Tamil poetess Avvaiyar.

Salem along with Coimbatore remained under the Madurai Nayaks. Later, in the early 18th century, it came under Hyder Ali after a long feud know as the Mysore-Madurai war.
In 1965 Salem District was bifurcated into Salem-Dharmapuri Districts. Salem constituted 8 Taluks. Dharmapuri constituted 4 Taluks - Hosur, Krishnagiri, Harur and Dharmapuri. Salem constituted 8 taluks - Salem, Yercaud, Attur, Omalur, Mettur, Sankagiri, Gangavalli, Idappadi. In 1998 Attur Division was newly formed and a new Taluk Valappadi was formed.


Air :
Salem Domestic Airport is 20 min. drive from the city. The nearest International airports is Trichy Airport (135 km) and Coimbatore Airport (159 km).

Rail :
Salem Railway division has a total length of 842Km and six railway routes merging junction, so it plays an important transit point in south India.

Road :
Three important National Highways NH7(North-South), NH47(Leading to West) and NH68(Leading to East) intersect at Salem. Two major bus stands are- MGR Integrated Bus Terminus (New Bus Stand)- Mofussil Routes & Town Bus Stand (Old Bus Stand) - Local Routes.

Salem Features

Salem is at the base of the renowned tourist destination of Yercaud hills, which offers breathtaking views both along the ride up the hill and from the peak.

Salem is one of the largest producers of traditional silver anklets, which are popular among women.

Salem boasts large textile, automotive, poultry and sago industries.

Salem has one of the largest magnesite deposits in India. Companies like Dalmia and TANMAG have mines here.

Yercaud is less expensive place than either Udhagamandalam or Kodaikkanal the peaceful hill station of Yercaud nestles among coffee plantations and thickly forested slopes and is a good place for trekking and boating.

Some people believe that these hills were part of the ancient megalith-builders’ domain which stretched from Cornwall through Brittany and Iberia to India.
Sightseeing : On the way up the winding hill road with its 20 hairpin bends, stop at a thatched wayside stall selling ‘Fresh Garden Produce’: packets of cloves and pepper.

Then come the coffee plantations before entering cottage-dotted Yercaud.

You can amble around leisurely, or do a tandem tour of the lake in a pedal boat, or hire a taxi to ‘do’ the sights. 3 km away is the rocky escarpment overlooking the plains.

It is known as Lady’s Seat and some wag has named another viewpoint as Gent’s Seat.

Pyramid point, 3 km away, has cairns of stones and was once a Stone Age fortress shrine before the new temple was built.

7 km from the lake is the Servaroyan Temple with a modern, striped, facade leading to an old cave temple.

Once you get into this soothing, lake-centred, quiet and undisturbed green place, you don’t have to do anything but unwind.

Yercaud is salubrious climate and is pleasant to be visited any time of the year.

Air : The nearest Airports is Trichy (163 km), Banglore (250 km) and Coimbatore (190 km). Both are connected to Chennai.

Rail : The nearest railway station is Salem Junction (3.5 km)

Road :There are regular bus services between Yercaud and Salem, which is connected to Madras, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Tiruvannamalai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Pondicherry and Tirupati among other places
